Setting up of a cost-effective continuous desalination plant based on coupling solar and geothermal energy

Abstract The aim of the work was to describe and test a solar desalination system for salt brackish water considering real application, in order provide detailed technical features future plant based on calculated data by modelling approach. main innovative aspect studied consists reproducing, restricted environment, cycle that commonly occurs nature. process is thermal distillation first humidification phase second air dehumidification, exploiting, at steady-state conditions, only energy, it capable 24 h day−1. It built with materials are used building sector, reducing construction costs. findings have led easily integrable scale scenarios recover fresh from solution or water, both potable uses uses. Thanks these technological solutions, low specific energy consumption (5.5 kWh m−3 water) obtained, envisaging lower running cost.
